EMERGENCY NUMBERS

The main emergency number for UK is 999 – you should dial this number for any major emergency such as an accident, a terrorist attack or requesting an ambulance, the firemen or the police.

In Britain, you can be hospitalised and treated free of charge as an emergency patient regardless of your nationality. Only if you stay in the hospital for over a night, you may be asked to pay later for the treatment if your country hasn't got a reciprocal health agreement with the UK.

For minor health issues, you have the NHS 24-hour helpline: 0845 46 47.

I rung them the other day because I wasn't feeling very well. A very nice lady answered on the other end of the phone, took my symptoms and advised me of what could be wrong with me. She then organized an ambulance to come and pick me up and take me to the hospital. I am very impressed with the quality of service that I received from the NHS. The people were very nice and the complete process was very well organized. - Sam

The quality of the NHS is excellent if you are very sick. My experiences have been good except for if you are only a little sick. Getting in to see my GP can be very frustrating. Sometimes having to wait three days to see her. If something you think is urgent, you should go and brave the long wait in the A&E queue. I have heard of people waiting 14 hours to be seen. But at least it is not three days!!!

If you dial the American 911 number you also get through to the emergency services. In-fact the European standard number is actually 112, but no one seems to know that.
